Filmmaker Frank Stiefel artfully compiled this moving tribute to his mother, a deaf Jewish woman who endured unimaginable isolation and suffering in Nazi Germany and then triumphed by traveling to America and reclaiming her dignity and freedom. Ignored by her parents, Ingelore said her first word at age 6 and completed her first sentence at 12. Composed of a mix of first-person narrative in spoken English and American Sign Language, archival footage, and simple re-creations, this story of survival and escape owes its uplifting spirit to the silent eloquence of Ingelore, as she expresses the horror and confusion of her tumultuous childhood.
